Gram-negative, hospital-acquired infections: a growing problem.
نویسنده
چکیده
This issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology contains multiple articles focusing on the clinical and public health implications of infections by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii and their resistance profiles to commonly prescribed antimicrobials. The first five articles in this issue add to a growing body of literature that substantiates the following: (1) as in North America, gramnegative pathogens are important causes of hospitalacquired infections in Europe and Asia; (2) antimicrobial resistance among gram-negative pathogens is a global problem; (3) the pathogens encountered in healthcare institutions in North America, Europe, and Asia are, for the most part, similar; (4) the risk factors (eg, device use or antimicrobial overprescribing) associated with hospitalacquired infections and antimicrobial resistance are universal; (5) surveillance activities are important for the characterization and control of gram-negative, healthcareassociated infections in Europe and Asia and require appropriate integration of epidemiologic, microbiologic, and clinical data; and (6) the microbiology laboratory is important in the characterization and control of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance.

Hospital acquired infection have 2 origins: 1) Infections acquired from the hospitalization. 2) Infections that transmit from hospital personnel and those who referred to a hospital. According to the studies approximately half of hospital acquired infection is under the first group. Gram-negative bacilli is of prime importance from all bacteries that caused hospital acquired infection. There ar...
متن کاملعلل شایع و الگوی مقاومت آنتیبیوتیکی در عفونتهای بیمارستانی و اکتسابی از جامعه
Background and Objective: Empirical antibiotic therapy of community- and hospital-acquired infections without the knowledge of the common causes and resistance patterns of the infections can lead to the enhancement of antibiotic resistance. Regarding this, the aim of this study was to determine the etiologic agents and antibiotic resistance pattern of community- and hospital-acquired infections...
متن کاملDetection of Metallo-Beta-lactamase Production in Rare Carbapenem-Resistant Non-fermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli Isolated in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Visakhapatnam, India
Introduction: Non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) are occasionally involved in infectious diseases pathology, but have shown resistance to multiple antibiotics and the capability to gain new resistance factors in the hospital environment. The present study was aimed to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of rare NFGNB isolated from different clinical samples and the pre...

Background & Objective: Nosocomial infection is one of the most daunting challenges to the global health care system. The current study aimed to compare the antimicrobial resistance pattern in hospital versus community-acquired infections in pediatric patients in Besat Hospital, Hamadan, Iran. Materials & Methods: The current study was carried out on all patients with a hospital-acquired infec...
متن کاملEvaluation of quinolone resistance in gram negative bacilli isolated from community- and hospital-acquired infections.
OBJECTIVE Gram negative bacilli are among the most important microbial agents involved in both hospital- and community-acquired infections. The quinolones are preferred antibacterial agents for the treatment of both community- and hospital-acquired urinary tract infections caused by gram negative bacilli because of their strong antibacterial effects, and because they can be administered both or...
